Long before Saturn became the internet’s planet of control, black cubes and cosmic imprisonment, it was already associated with a god who ate his children, the slow passage of time, old age, melancholy, lead and the outer boundary of the known heavens. The modern mythology arrived late. Most of its ingredients did not.
Saturn has a six-sided atmospheric structure roughly 30,000 kilometres across, centred precisely on its north pole. Voyager saw it in the early 1980s, Cassini returned more than two decades later and found it still there, and later observations suggested that the geometry may extend hundreds of kilometres upward through the atmosphere. Physics can produce polygonal flows, but why Saturn maintains this particular one has made the hexagon a meeting point between planetary science, sacred geometry, occult symbolism and theories of a Saturn-Moon control system.
Saturn’s rings look like ornament. They behave more like an instrument. The waves, ripples and disturbances running through them have allowed scientists to probe the planet’s interior, estimate the length of its day and ask how old the rings really are. At what point does a beautiful halo around a planet start behaving like a recording surface?
