Agartha: The Underground Kingdom That Entered Western Occultism in 1886

Agartha sounds ancient.

That helps.

A secret underground kingdom populated by spiritually advanced masters should ideally appear to have been whispered about since the beginning of civilization.

The recognizable Western Agartha story has a much clearer paper trail.

French occultist Alexandre Saint-Yves d'Alveydre wrote about Agarttha in Mission de l'Inde, published in 1886.

His underground world supposedly contained vast cities beneath Asia ruled by a spiritually advanced hierarchy. Later versions connected Agartha with Shambhala, hidden masters and the Hollow Earth.

Saint-Yves described a society possessing knowledge and spiritual advancement superior to the surface world.

This is almost unfairly perfect mythology.

The hidden civilization is wiser than us.

More advanced than us.

Possesses ancient libraries.

Knows secrets we forgot.

And conveniently lives somewhere extremely difficult to check.

Agartha subsequently became entangled with Theosophy, esotericism, occult geography and eventually UFO and Hollow Earth culture.

The myth survives because underground civilizations solve a narrative problem.

Lost Atlantis is gone.

Ancient civilizations are dead.

Aliens are inconveniently far away.

But an underground civilization can be ancient, advanced and still technically here.

All you need is a sufficiently large mountain and a complete lack of drilling permission.
