Roman Concrete Can Heal Its Own Cracks. We Are Just Rediscovering How.
Look at a piece of ancient Roman concrete closely enough and you may find little white chunks embedded throughout it.
For a long time, these lime-rich pieces were easy to dismiss as imperfections.
Perhaps the Romans had simply mixed their concrete badly.
This creates a slightly awkward question.
Why would builders capable of producing enormous domes, aqueducts, harbours and structures still standing after two millennia be consistently bad at mixing one of their most important materials?
Researchers from MIT and other institutions investigated those white fragments and arrived at a more interesting explanation.
They may have helped the concrete repair itself.
Roman concrete was produced differently from most modern concrete. In one ancient method investigated by the researchers, quicklime was incorporated through a process involving high temperatures known as hot mixing.
That process produced distinctive lime clasts inside the material.
When a small crack later formed and water entered it, the crack could travel through one of these calcium-rich areas.
The water then interacted with the lime.
Calcium-rich material could move into the crack and recrystallise as calcium carbonate, effectively filling part of the damage with new mineral material.
The researchers tested the idea by producing concrete using the ancient-inspired technique. Cracked samples made with the lime clasts healed when water flowed through them, while comparison material without them did not behave the same way.
That does not mean all Roman concrete was immortal. Plenty of Roman buildings disappeared.
Nor does it mean modern engineering somehow forgot how concrete works. Modern reinforced concrete performs tasks ancient builders never attempted, and steel reinforcement introduces entirely different durability problems.
But the discovery changes how those suspicious white lumps look.
What appeared to be primitive manufacturing may have been part of a sophisticated material strategy.
The Romans did not make concrete that never cracked.
They may have made concrete that knew what to do when it did.
