The Great Pyramid Points Almost Perfectly North. Why?

The Great Pyramid does not merely face roughly north. Its entire base was laid out against the geography of the Earth. How its builders established that direction is still debated.

Stand at the Great Pyramid with a compass and one thing becomes difficult to ignore: its four sides follow the cardinal directions.

The north face looks north. The opposite side faces south. The others run east and west.

Modern surveys place the deviation from true north within only a few minutes of arc. Surveys of Khufu's and Khafre's pyramids also find their north-south axes differing from one another by only about half an arcminute.

This is geographic north, not magnetic north. A compass needle moves as Earth's magnetic field changes. True north is the direction toward the geographic North Pole.

So how did someone establish it on a plateau without a compass?


They Could Have Watched the Sky

One proposal uses circumpolar stars, stars that never set beneath the horizon from Egypt.

Egyptologist Kate Spence suggested that builders could have observed two such stars as they passed into vertical alignment and used a plumb line to establish north. She also found that small orientation differences between Old Kingdom pyramids change systematically in a way that could result from the slow movement of the stars caused by Earth's axial precession.

Other researchers have tested solar methods instead. By tracking shadows, especially around an equinox, it is possible to construct an east-west line and obtain north and south from it. Experimental work has shown that such methods can approach the accuracy seen at Giza.

We know the direction.

We do not know which procedure produced it.


Giza May Have Been Oriented as a Landscape

The pyramids were not placed as three isolated triangles.

Research into the Giza plateau has examined relationships between the monuments, the rising and setting Sun and the surrounding landscape. One study found that the southeast corners of the major Giza pyramids form a line toward ancient Heliopolis, the centre of the Egyptian solar cult. Similar landscape planning appears in the later pyramid field at Abusir.

That suggests that north may have been only one part of a larger geographical and religious plan.


Other Civilisations Did Similar Things, But Not the Same Thing

Giza is not alone in connecting architecture with the sky.

Stonehenge's principal axis relates to the solstitial Sun. Khmer monuments around Angkor show repeated cardinal and astronomical orientations. Different societies separated by oceans and millennia repeatedly used sunrise, sunset, north, south and conspicuous points on the horizon when deciding where sacred structures should face.

There are also modern claims that Giza lies on a single great circle connecting places such as Easter Island, Nazca, Petra and other ancient sites. Such lines can certainly be drawn on a globe, and versions of the claim circulate widely.

What has not been demonstrated is that the builders of these unrelated sites intentionally participated in one planetary alignment system.


The smaller mystery remains at Giza itself.

Someone established true north, transferred that direction onto the ground, extended it across hundreds of metres and preserved it while a gigantic structure rose above the plateau.

Was north simply the most reliable way to organise the building, was it connected to Egyptian ideas about the eternal northern stars, or was the pyramid positioned inside a larger landscape whose full design we no longer see?
