The Strangest Thing About Astrology Is How Accurate It Can Feel

Astrology has a serious scientific problem. That does not stop a horoscope from occasionally sounding as though somebody has been reading your private messages.

"You value independence, but sometimes wish other people understood you more deeply."

That probably applies to you.

"You can be sociable, but you also need time alone."

Probably true.

"You have abilities you are not always using to their full potential."

Congratulations. The stars have found you.

Or we have stumbled into the Barnum effect.

The Barnum, or Forer, effect describes our tendency to recognise ourselves in personality descriptions that are broad enough to apply to many people.

The trick works because generic does not necessarily feel generic from the inside.

When reading a horoscope, you compare it with your own enormous private archive of memories.

"You have been reconsidering an important relationship."

Maybe that means your partner. Your mother. A friend. Your colleague. Someone you dated six years ago.

The statement supplies very little information. You supply the specificity.

Confirmation bias helps.

Hits are interesting. Misses are disposable.

A strangely accurate sentence gets remembered and shared. The prediction that went nowhere quietly dies before lunch.

Astrology has not performed well when these impressions are subjected to controlled testing.

A well-known double-blind study published in Nature tested whether astrologers could accurately match natal charts to personality information under controlled conditions and did not support the claimed predictive ability.

That leaves an interesting puzzle.

Why can astrology remain enjoyable even when you know this?

Because humans do not use stories only to predict reality.

We use them to think about ourselves.

A horoscope can prompt someone to consider a relationship, ambition, fear or habit even if Saturn had nothing whatsoever to do with it.

In that sense, astrology can function less like a telescope and more like a mirror.

The reflection may be real.

The mechanism you were given for explaining it does not have to be.
