We Say Khufu Built the Great Pyramid. How Do We Actually Know?

There are names inside it, a 4,500-year-old shipping log connected to it, and radiocarbon dates that broadly fit the accepted chronology. There is also no surviving inscription saying Khufu ordered the Great Pyramid built from scratch. In 2026, someone proposed that the monument could be tens of thousands of years older.

We Say Khufu Built the Great Pyramid. How Do We Actually Know?

Ask who built the Great Pyramid and the answer arrives almost automatically: Pharaoh Khufu, around 2600 BCE.

That is the standard archaeological attribution, and it is not based on nothing. Khufu is deeply connected with the monument and the surrounding Giza complex. Harvard's Digital Giza project straightforwardly identifies him as the builder, reflecting the overwhelming conventional position in Egyptology.


But archaeology rarely provides the sort of evidence modern people expect.

There is no surviving royal foundation inscription inside the Great Pyramid declaring that Khufu ordered construction to begin in a particular year. We do not possess architectural plans signed by his administration. Nobody has found Khufu's diary complaining that the northern workforce was three weeks behind schedule.

Instead, the case is assembled from several different pieces of evidence.

And when those pieces are examined separately, the answer becomes more interesting.


Khufu's Name Really Is Inside the Pyramid

Above the chamber traditionally called the King's Chamber are several small spaces built to relieve the enormous weight of stone overhead.

When British explorer Howard Vyse opened previously inaccessible chambers there in 1837, he found painted quarry and work-gang markings on the blocks. Among them were forms of Khufu's royal name. Modern scholarship recognises multiple versions of his name among these marks, alongside the sort of practical construction graffiti found elsewhere in Egyptian building projects.


It connects people working with Khufu's name directly to stones incorporated high inside the Great Pyramid.

Alternative writers have occasionally alleged that Vyse forged the markings, largely because their authenticity is inconvenient for a much older pyramid.

The markings are not a lone beautifully presented royal cartouche. They belong to a wider system of rough builders' marks and gang names associated with Egyptian construction practice.


A Shipping Log Turned Up by the Red Sea

In 2013, archaeologists working at Wadi el-Jarf on Egypt's Red Sea coast discovered papyri from the reign of Khufu.

Among them was the diary of an official named Merer.

Merer recorded the activities of a crew transporting high-quality limestone from the Tura quarries toward a place called Akhet-Khufu, usually translated as “Horizon of Khufu,” the ancient name associated with Khufu's pyramid complex.

The diary comes from late in Khufu's reign. Mark Lehner's Giza Plateau Mapping Project describes Merer's crew as delivering limestone by boat from Tura to the Great Pyramid and reconstructs a waterway system that could have brought the stone remarkably close to the construction site.

This may be the strongest surviving piece of documentary evidence linking Khufu's administration directly with major stone work at Giza.


It is also frequently described more strongly than the document itself allows.

Merer does not write, “Today we continued constructing the Great Pyramid, which our divine king Khufu began twenty years ago.”

The conventional interpretation is obvious: his crews were working on his pyramid.

A hypothetical older-monument theory could instead argue that they were casing, restoring or completing something already standing.

There is currently no comparable evidence demonstrating that alternative scenario. But Merer's diary by itself cannot logically exclude it.


The Entire Landscape Looks Fourth Dynasty

The strongest case for Khufu does not rest on one inscription or one papyrus.


The Great Pyramid sits inside a wider architectural and archaeological complex associated with Khufu: temples, a causeway, subsidiary pyramids, boat pits and extensive cemeteries. Archaeological work around Giza has also uncovered settlements and infrastructure associated with the enormous labour organisation required during the pyramid-building period. Harvard's Giza archive treats these elements as parts of Khufu's monumental programme rather than isolated objects that happened to gather around an inexplicably ancient pyramid.


If Khufu merely discovered a gigantic prehistoric monument, an enormous amount of Fourth Dynasty activity subsequently became organised around it in a way that looks remarkably like a royal construction complex.


Radiocarbon Dating Makes a Very Ancient Pyramid Difficult

Stone cannot be radiocarbon dated.

Unfortunately for archaeologists, limestone remains stubbornly unwilling to tell us when somebody stacked it.

Organic material incorporated into mortar can be dated, however.


Radiocarbon programmes sampled material from Old Kingdom monuments, including the Great Pyramid. The results were messy. Samples associated with Khufu's pyramid produced dates spread across roughly four centuries, and many were older than the conventional historical chronology by around 100 to 200 years.

At first glance, that sounds exciting.

Perhaps the pyramid really is older.


But there is a known problem.

Radiocarbon dating tells us when an organism stopped exchanging carbon with the environment. If Egyptians burned timber that was already centuries old and put that ash into mortar, the test dates the wood rather than the day the mortar was mixed.

Ancient Egypt was not exactly overflowing with forests. Wood was valuable and could be reused for long periods. Researchers involved in the pyramid dating project therefore consider the “old wood” effect a plausible explanation for much of the discrepancy.

Still, these measurements are worth remembering because they are not perfectly tidy.

The radiocarbon evidence broadly supports an Old Kingdom pyramid.


What it certainly does not currently support is a monument constructed 10,000 or 20,000 years ago.

For that to work, the dated mortar would have to belong to a much later repair or reconstruction phase rather than the original building.

Conceivable.

But now another assumption has been added.


The Idea of a Much Older Giza Never Quite Dies

The suggestion that Giza preserves something older than dynastic Egypt has appeared in several forms.

One famous version concerns the Great Sphinx rather than the Great Pyramid. Geologist Robert Schoch has argued that weathering around the Sphinx enclosure indicates prolonged rainfall and therefore a substantially earlier origin, perhaps before 5000 BCE. Other geologists and Egyptologists dispute that interpretation and propose different mechanisms and climatic histories for the erosion.


Robert Bauval's Orion Correlation Theory approached the question through astronomy. It proposed that the arrangement of the three main Giza pyramids reflects Orion's Belt, with later versions of the argument linking the complex to the sky around 10,500 BCE. Quantitative astronomical studies have investigated the apparent correspondence, but no astronomical alignment can independently establish when the stone monuments themselves were constructed.

Both ideas helped create the modern image of Giza as possibly preserving a much earlier chapter of human history.

Then, in January 2026, a considerably more dramatic claim appeared.


A 2026 Theory Puts the Great Pyramid Around 23,000 BCE

Italian engineer Alberto Donini published a preliminary study proposing what he calls the Relative Erosion Method, or REM.

Rather than dating organic material, Donini compared erosion on limestone surfaces supposedly exposed since the pyramid's construction with neighbouring surfaces that had remained protected by casing stones until those stones were removed centuries ago.

His calculation produced an extraordinary result.


For the Great Pyramid, Donini reported a mean age of about 24,941 years before present, corresponding to approximately 22,916 BCE, with a very broad proposed range extending from roughly 8954 BCE to 36,878 BCE. He suggested that Khufu may have renovated or appropriated a monument that was already immensely old.

If correct, it would demolish the accepted history of monumental architecture.

It is also, at present, nowhere near established.

The paper is explicitly a preprint and has not been peer reviewed.


More importantly, its method depends heavily on erosion behaving predictably over enormous periods of time. Donini assumes erosion is approximately proportional to exposure time while acknowledging that climate, rainfall, sand coverage, salt, human traffic, differences within the limestone and changing environmental conditions can all alter the rate. He himself describes the resulting dates as estimates of an order of magnitude rather than precise ages.

That matters enormously when extrapolating several centuries of apparent erosion into tens of thousands of years.

The theory is therefore interesting because it makes a testable claim about the physical monument.

It is not currently evidence strong enough to move the Great Pyramid into the Upper Paleolithic.

But it has reopened a useful question.


What Would an Older Pyramid Actually Require?

Suppose the Great Pyramid was already standing when Khufu became king.

Then the Khufu markings inside it would need to belong to substantial later construction or renovation.

Merer's limestone shipments would need to represent restoration, casing or completion rather than initial construction.

Old Kingdom mortar would need to have entered an older structure during that work.

And the surrounding Fourth Dynasty complex would need to have been built around, or adapted to, a monument inherited from an earlier civilisation.

None of those propositions is individually impossible.

Together, however, they create a much more complicated historical model than the conventional explanation that Khufu's administration built the pyramid.


So Did Khufu Build It?

Perhaps Khufu really did command the entire project exactly as modern Egyptology reconstructs it.

Or perhaps his workers arrived at a place whose history was already older than they knew.

Which one happened?
