Why Does Your Dog Tilt Its Head When You Talk?

You say something to your dog. The dog looks at you. Then the head rotates slightly to one side. Human civilisation immediately collapses.

This behaviour is usually interpreted as confusion. It certainly looks that way.

But research suggests there may be more happening than a dog simply producing the canine equivalent of a question mark.

Researchers at Eötvös Loránd University studied dogs that had demonstrated an unusual ability to learn the names of toys. Most dogs in their studies struggled to learn even a small number of object labels under controlled conditions. A few exceptional dogs could learn many. These became known as Gifted Word Learner dogs.

When owners asked the dogs to retrieve toys by name, the gifted dogs tilted their heads much more frequently than typical dogs. More interestingly, individual dogs tended to tilt consistently toward the same side across experiments spanning months.

The researchers suggested that head tilting may be associated with attentive processing of meaningful information.

That does not establish a universal translation. A dog tilting its head does not necessarily mean, "I have recognised this lexical item and am retrieving its semantic representation." Sometimes the dog may simply be listening.

Head position could also affect how sound reaches the ears, how the dog visually inspects a human face or how several sensory signals are combined.

And behaviour varies enormously between individual dogs.

But the research does provide an intriguing clue. At least in some circumstances, the famous tilt appears when a dog is processing information it recognises as relevant.

So when you ask where the ball is and the head tilts, something may genuinely be happening behind the expression.

The dog might be thinking.

Unfortunately, this discovery has done nothing to reduce the likelihood that you will repeat the sentence in a ridiculous voice.
