You are washing dishes.

Suddenly a song begins playing in your head.

Not the whole song. That would at least demonstrate commitment.

Instead, you get one fragment. A chorus. A melody. Half a line. Perhaps five seconds of something you heard in a supermarket three days ago.

It repeats.

Psychologists call this involuntary musical imagery. Everyone else calls it an earworm.

Research suggests earworms are extremely common and are often triggered by recent musical exposure.

But they can also appear through associations.

A word reminds you of a lyric. A place reminds you of a song. A rhythm in everyday life resembles a musical pattern. Sometimes no trigger is obvious at all.

The peculiar repetition may partly reflect the way musical memory works.

Music is structured around expectation. Melodies create patterns that make the next note feel predictable. When a remembered fragment activates without the rest of the song, your brain can end up repeatedly reconstructing the same incomplete section.

Earworms also seem to thrive when the mind has spare capacity.

Experiments have found that involuntary musical imagery becomes less common when people are occupied with sufficiently demanding cognitive tasks. Apparently your internal radio station operates most efficiently when management is away.

Trying aggressively not to think about the song can be unhelpful. Suppression often keeps attention fixed on the very thing you are attempting to remove.

Some people find that listening to the entire song helps by completing the fragment. Others replace it with another piece of music. Sometimes doing something cognitively demanding is enough.

And occasionally the brain simply becomes bored before you do.

Earworms are mostly harmless.

But they reveal something odd about memory.

You do not always decide what to remember. Sometimes memory selects a four-bar loop and places itself in charge of programming.
